
A tonne is a unit of mass, not a unit of performance
Procurement spreadsheets naturally compare price per tonne because suppliers quote that way. The problem is that two tonnes carrying the same chemical name may contain different active concentrations or deliver different process performance.
The lowest tonne price can therefore be a poor guide to the lowest operating cost.
Concentration changes active cost
If one caustic solution is stronger than another, fewer tonnes may be needed to deliver the same mass of sodium hydroxide. Similar logic applies to acids, oxidants and other solutions.

Dose changes cost in use
Formulated products such as flocculants, coagulants and water-treatment programmes may perform at different doses. A higher-priced product can be cheaper if substantially less is required.
Plant trial data provides a stronger basis than comparing bags or drums.
Freight can dominate low-value bulk chemicals
For products such as lime and other high-volume reagents, transport distance and shipment size can materially affect delivered economics.
A supplier with a higher ex-works price may still be cheaper at the plant gate.
Packaging creates hidden cost
Drums and bags require handling and leave packaging to manage. IBCs and bulk deliveries have different infrastructure and residual-product implications.
Those costs do not appear in the chemical’s basic tonne price.
Reliability has economic value
A low-priced source that regularly arrives late can force emergency purchases or production interruptions. A dependable source may allow the business to operate with less safety stock.
Supplier performance therefore belongs in the commercial comparison.
Choose a cost metric that matches the process
Depending on the application, the useful measure may be cost per kilogram of active chemical, per cubic metre of water treated, per tonne of ore processed or per unit of finished product.
Once procurement uses the right denominator, negotiations focus on value the operation can actually measure.
