Closed systems are not automatically corrosion-free

Closed-loop chilled-water, heating and process circuits lose less water than open cooling systems, but that does not eliminate corrosion risk. Oxygen entry, poor water chemistry, mixed metallurgy, leaks and contamination can all damage internal surfaces over time.

A corrosion inhibitor programme should therefore be selected around the actual system. Procurement should be cautious with generic ‘closed-loop treatment’ products offered without discussion of metallurgy and water conditions. Different metals need different protection

A loop may contain carbon steel, copper, brass, aluminium, stainless steel or combinations of these materials. A treatment that protects one metal well may need additional chemistry or different control limits when other metals are present.

The site should provide a basic materials profile when requesting proposals. This helps suppliers recommend an appropriate inhibitor programme rather than guess.

Water quality sets the starting point

Make-up water hardness, chloride, conductivity, alkalinity and pH can influence corrosion and deposition. The quality of water initially used to fill the system also matters because closed loops may retain that water for long periods.

Inhibitor residual must be monitored

Procurement should understand the test method and expected control range when evaluating a product. If proprietary test kits or reagents are required, those should be included in the supply plan.

Microbiological growth can still occur

Closed systems can develop microbiological problems, especially where temperature and nutrient conditions are favourable or contamination enters during maintenance. Slime and under-deposit corrosion can become difficult to control once established.

Where a biocide programme is required, it should be selected by competent water-treatment personnel and checked for compatibility with the corrosion inhibitor and system materials.

A change in inhibitor programme should be deliberate

Switching chemistry can require flushing, compatibility checks or changes in control parameters. Procurement should avoid topping one proprietary treatment on top of another without technical review.

The new supplier should explain transition requirements clearly and provide SDS, product data and dosing guidance before the change.

The goal is asset life, not chemical consumption

The cost of inhibitor is usually small relative to chillers, heat exchangers, piping and production equipment connected to the loop. Evaluating the programme only on chemical price therefore misses the larger objective.
