
An antiscalant is part of the RO design, not an accessory
Reverse osmosis systems concentrate dissolved salts on the feed side of the membrane. As recovery increases, sparingly soluble salts can exceed their solubility limits and form scale. Antiscalants are used to help control that risk within the operating envelope of the system.
Because the product interacts with feedwater chemistry, a lower-priced antiscalant should not be substituted casually. The new product should be checked against the actual water analysis and membrane operating conditions.
The feedwater analysis needs to be current
Calcium, magnesium, alkalinity, sulphate, silica, barium, strontium and other constituents can influence scaling risk. A projection based on old or unrepresentative water data may give false confidence.
Before comparing antiscalants, the plant should provide a representative feed analysis, pH, temperature, recovery, permeate flow and relevant membrane details. The supplier can then model a realistic dose.
Higher dose is not automatically better protection
Antiscalants have recommended operating ranges. Overdosing does not necessarily solve every scaling problem and may create other operational issues or unnecessary cost.
The correct dose should come from the supplier’s projection and site validation. Procurement should compare cost at the expected dose rather than simply comparing price per kilogram.
Membrane compatibility matters
The chosen antiscalant should be compatible with the membrane system and other treatment chemicals used upstream. If the plant also doses coagulants, chlorine scavengers, acids or biocides, those interactions deserve review. Many antiscalants are supplied as liquid formulations. Buyers should confirm shelf life, recommended storage conditions, freezing or heat limitations where relevant, and whether dilution is permitted before dosing.
