A chemical store is not an ordinary warehouse

Industrial sites may hold acids, alkalis, oxidisers, reducing agents, treatment chemicals, solvents and dry reagents in the same general area. The danger is not only the hazard of each product on its own. Some materials can react strongly when accidentally mixed.

That makes compatibility a basic part of chemical storage design. Procurement should understand that a new chemical may require more than an empty pallet position before it can be received.

The SDS is the starting point

A current safety data sheet normally provides information on storage conditions, incompatible materials and handling precautions. HSE and site procedures should translate that information into the actual storage arrangement.

Acids and alkalis need deliberate separation

Strong acids and strong bases can react vigorously and generate significant heat when mixed. The correct separation should follow product-specific guidance rather than a generic rule copied from another chemical.

Secondary containment should not create a mixing point

Bunds and spill containment are intended to control releases, but placing incompatible products inside the same containment area can allow them to mix during an incident.

Storage planning should therefore consider what happens after a container fails, not only where the intact container normally sits.

Clear product identification, closed containers and orderly storage reduce the chance of material being placed in the wrong zone. Damaged or unreadable labels should be corrected before containers become difficult to identify.
